Let’s face it- this week is going to be brutal. If you’re anything like me, you don’t plan on sleeping too much. The good news is that there is a safe, warm place to study that’s not your bedroom where you might be tempted to “rest your eyes.” What is this magical place? The Millar Library! This year the library is extending its hours beginning Wednesday until the end of finals week.
Students often ask why the library doesn’t hold these hours all of the time. I spoke to library staff a couple of weeks ago and was told that they would love to have longer hours during the rest of the term. So why don’t they? If you thought that money might be involved, you’d be right. Fellow PSU Chronicles blogger, Atziri Sanchez wrote about this topic in detail last spring. The library’s budget is approved by the FFC, the Financial Futures Committee. If the library wants more money to hire the staff to keep the library open longer hours, these are the people they need to convince. Here’s where you come in. Library staff will be taking headcounts every hour beginning Wednesday and continuing through the extended hours period. They can then take these numbers to the FFC to aid in the argument that extended library hours are needed by students. All you have to do to make that happen is show up!
So, if you want to see the library open more hours during the term, Occupy the Library beginning this Wednesday! Tell your friends! And remember to thank the library staff for adjusting their schedules so that you can study. Oh, and good luck on your finals. I’m right there with you.
