Get to know PSU by meeting with a Student Ambassador

The best way to find out about the student experience at a university? Go directly to the source!

Portland State University Student Ambassadors (known campus wide as STAMBs) are available most weekdays for 1:1 virtual chats with prospective students or any other individuals who want to learn more about Portland’s unique urban university.

A variety of STAMBs have appointments available right now to chat via virtual Zoom meeting or phone! Some are transfer students, some started at PSU as freshmen, some live on campus or in other local housing, some commute, some are Oregon natives, some came to PSU from as far away as Oman, China, and Vietnam. Our STAMBs speak several languages (in addition to English) including Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Japanese.

A couple of our friendly Student Ambassadors, Max and Emily, told us about why they enjoy chatting with prospective students and what the experience has been like for them:

How are the appointments useful to get to know PSU and why should prospective students sign up for one?

Student Ambassadors are experts at all things PSU, and we’re here to share our experience with you! Ask us about our favorite resources centers, clubs and organizations, what it’s like to live on campus or commute, and how to find community while at Portland State. Each of us has our own perspective on what makes this campus great, so sign up for a 1:1 to learn more for yourself!

Prospective students who sign up will be more prepared and excited for their college experience, which might be the place they enjoy for the next few years! Through chatting about our experiences, prospective and returning students can find out more about college life, ease the transition, and make a connection even before coming to PSU! 🙂

Any unique questions or conversations you’ve had with students?

Most questions we get are about different majors or programs we have at PSU. Whether you want to learn more about our tuition-free degree program, the honors college, or even how to become a Student Ambassador yourself, we’ve got you covered. One question I’m always happy to answer is my favorite resource center, which happens to be La Casa Latina. We have so many cultural and identity-based resource centers for everyone to feel at home, and it’s where I was able to meet some of my closest friends! Most prospective students we meet with are super nice, and we are so happy to be able to answer their questions / make a connection.

How much do you enjoy meeting new students and sharing your PSU experience?

No doubt the best part of my job is being able to meet every visitor and learn what brought them to PSU. It’s inspiring to hear everyone’s different backgrounds, and it makes me happy to be able to share my own journey coming to PSU. I love helping transfer students, especially being a transfer student myself from PCC.  A new school can be a little scary for most people, but I love being able to reassure everyone by introducing them to the awesome campus community we have!
