Your Life as a Portland State Student

What’s it like to be a student at PSU? Here are answers to some of our most common questions:

HOW MANY MAJORS ARE THERE? HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MAJORS AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMS?

So many. We have 88 undergraduate majors and a total of 173 undergraduate majors, minors, certificates and concentrations. From accounting to theater arts, we have something for everyone.  Learn about our academic programs. Portland State also has a number of special academic programs, such as:

  • University Studies: our nationally recognized, interdisciplinary general education program.
  • Our Honors College provides the benefits of a small liberal arts college embedded in Oregon’s only public urban research university.
  • With BUILD EXITO, our undergraduate research training program, you can get real-world experience and embark on a journal to become a scientific researcher.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED AND MEET PEOPLE ON CAMPUS?

Whether you’re living on campus or commuting to class, there are tons of ways to meet people at Portland State. Our campus is home to more than one hundred student organizations. Whether you’re interested in the arts, sports, sustainability, or developing your leadership skills, you can find something right for you. Don’t know where to begin? There are events happening every day for students at Portland State — cultural events, workshops, lectures, service projects, club meetings, and more! Check out Portland State Connect for all the ways you can get involved.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN THE AREA?

Where to begin? Portland State is nestled in the heart of Portland, a city known for its love of donuts, coffee, the Blazers, the Timbers and Thorns, bikes, the arts and keeping things weird. There is plenty to explore right around campus or by taking public transit. Read about upcoming Portland events. And if you’re looking to explore the natural beauty of Oregon’s beaches, mountains, forests and deserts consider taking a trip via PSU’s Outdoor Program or rent some affordable camping gear and head out on your own.

WHAT IS ON-CAMPUS LIVING LIKE?

About half of our first year students choose to live on campus and most have roommates. Our first year experience communities allow you to learn and live with people with similar academic interests. Take a virtual tour of some of our dorm rooms for first year and transfer student dorms. Still have questions? Read our frequently asked questions about housing. Residents and commuters alike might enjoy our list of the 6 best study spots on campus

WHAT ARE THE DINING OPTIONS LIKE?

Whether you live on campus or not, you can grab a bite (or several) at many on-campus eateries. PSU Eats options include a variety of vegan, vegetarian and allergen friendly foods.  Plus, Portland is kind of a foodie town—not that we’re snobs or anything—so there are plenty of nearby eating options, including food carts galore and local favorite restaurants like Love BelizeanLaughing PlanetPhat Cart and many more.

HOW AM I GOING TO PAY FOR ALL THIS?

We get it, college can be expensive. But it doesn’t have to be. We are committed to making the university experience accessible and affordable. Students can easily use PSU Scholarship Universe to submit a single application for the thousands of dollars in scholarships each year. With our new Tuition-Free Degree program, eligible Oregon students will get their tuition and most mandatory fees covered. The Washington Border Discount allows eligible Washington residents to pay just 110% of resident tuition, while the Western University Exchange (WUE) program offers tuition at 150% of the in-state rate for eligible nonresident students. All applicants are automatically considered for the Tuition-Free Degree, Washington Border Discount, and WUE programs, no separate application required. Once you’re enrolled, consider visiting our Financial Wellness Center, an innovative program that helps students manage their finances.  Learn more about financial aid at PSU.
